The National Council for Population and Development (NCPD) has started family planning campaigns.
NCPD deputy director Karugu Ngatia said family planning programmes had been abandoned in the last decade and attention directed to HIV/Aids control. Mr Ngatia said when the Government declared Aids a national disaster in 1999, focus shifted from family planning.
He said there was elaborate family planning awareness before HIV and Aids saw the Government, NGOs and donors direct support to the scourge.
Lack of funds, he said, affected outreach programmes but the new family planning campaigns aim at managing population growth to enable the country realise its millennium development goals and Vision 2030.
He spoke during a media briefing on family planning campaigns in Uasin Gishu County. “Three weeks ago, the Government adopted a policy paper for the implementation of the programme, which was passed by Parliament,” he said.
North Rift regional coordinator Rose Wakuloba and director of corporate affairs Kimeli Chepsiror were present.
