Ruiru Rolls out Caddies Kitty as Golf Slows

Over 100 caddies and casual workers at Ruiru Sports Club were beneficiaries of food donations made by members from the facility to cushion them from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. 

The caddies were rendered jobless after the government ordered closure of golf clubs, which rendered all caddies jobless.

With no golf action going on at the moment, caddies have been faced with difficult times as they struggle to make ends meet.

The restrictions have also left most of the casual workers with no source of income after the club shut down its services. 

“The pandemic has practically grounded the ecosystem around the club, prompting the need for members to chip in and support those affected. It’s a dire case as these people no longer have any known source of earnings,” said the club’s outgoing captain Peter Mwaura.

Permanent staff at the club have, however, been sent on paid leave. Only skeleton staff, who are working in shifts, have been left to maintain the premises and the golf course. 

To support the caddies and casuals, members have been contributing directly to a kitty run by a select committee made up of Ciira Kiiyukia, Nyambura Kanja and David Kibui.

The team also constitutes of the incoming golf captain Thomas Mwaura, vice captain elect Jessy Ndegwa and incoming Lady captain Edith Ngugi.

Some other members led by James Njagu and Dixon Waruingi contributed foodstuff worth over Sh50,000.
