Record Kenyan champions Gor Mahia have picked up the pace from where they left it two months ago after winning the 2023-2024 Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Charity Shield Cup on Saturday.

Gor Mahia edged out Kakamega Homeboyz 4-2 in post-match penalties to kick off their campaign with a cup victory ahead of the much-anticipated 2024 FKF Premier League season.

Speaking after their win, Gor head coach Jonathan McKinstry said he was happy to begin the campaign with a win.

“A perfect way to start the new season. Winning becomes a habit. Lifting the Shield Cup is another step in developing this young group of players. We now focus on the kick off the FKF Premier League in two weeks' time,” said McKinstry.

Boniface Omondi gave Gor the lead in the 60th minute through a training ground set piece after sending a volley off a corner kick into the net from the edge of the box.

Ten minutes later, Eston Esiye restored parity for Homeboyz after Gor shot stopper Caleb Omondi failed to hold on to the free kick as the ball slipped through his hands into the net.

Gor Mahia will begin their title defense against Sofapaka on August 26.
