Manchester City lead transfer chase for Everton's John Stones

Everton defender Stones had a torrid night at the Etihad on Wednesday in a Capital One Cup semi-final loss but that will not deter the Mancunian Blues, who are planning another summer of expensive recruitment.

Champions Chelsea still retains an interest in Stones, but it is not as keen as it was last summer under now-sacked manager Jose Mourinho.

And, of course, the Stamford Bridge club’s problems this season means it remains unlikely they will be able to offer Stones immediate Champions League football.

Goodson Park officials now expect City to be at the front of the pursuit of 21-year-old Stones, who has come under fire from sections of the Everton support recently.

With long-term worries over captain Vincent Kompany’s fitness persisting, the central defensive area remains a concern for City.

Barcelona and fellow Spanish super-club Real Madrid are monitoring the situation, but England international Stones is believed to want to stay in the Premier League for now.
