Last gasp Sony goal sinks AFC, SA women to jet in

Sony Sugar bounced back to winning ways with a 2-1 victory over AFC Leopards at Awendo Stadium on Monday.

Goals by Victor Ademba and Samuel Onyango sealed the match for Sony. Leopards, who travelled to Awendo without head coach Zdravko Logarusic, were lifted by a goal from Joseph Njuguna.

Ademba’s opening goal came in the 44th minute when he slotted home from a well taken free kick.

But Leopards were soon in the match on the one hour mark after Njuguna was brought on for Duncan Otieno. The former Gor Mahia and Mathare United midfielder netted the equaliser in the 80th minute when he found himself unmarked to slot the ball home.

Leopards would pay for poor defending at the back which time and again exposed Indeche in goal. With five minutes to full time, Sony were awarded a penalty which Onyango stepped up to score. The win could not have come at a better time considering the sugar millers have not won in a long time.

Elsewhere, Banyana Banyana the South African National Senior Women football team are scheduled to jet into the country on Thursday just three days ahead of their return leg fixture against Kenya’s Harambee Starlets .

The South Africans take a 1-0 lead from the first leg tie played in Johannesburg two weeks ago.

However the Starlets who put up a brave show in the away tie are confident of overcoming the highly rated South Africans come Sunday at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.

The Starlets under coach David Ouma headed straight to camp after returning home and are leaving nothing to chance.

“We have been training at the Nyayo Stadium and so far all is in place.The girls are aware of the big task ahead of them.

We are very grateful for the support from the federation and we urge all Kenyans to converge at the Kenyatta Stadium to cheer our team.

We saw the huge support during our last match against Botswana and we again appeal to Kenyans to rally behind the team,” he said.
