McDonald Mariga's club Parma FC relegated to Serie D after failing to find a new buyer

Parma FC, home of Kenyan midfielder Macdonald Mariga, have been demoted to the fourth tier of Italian football after failing to find a new owner for the club.

The two-time UEFA Cup winners were declared bankrupt back in March and have been trying to find themselves a new owner to relieve their debt to avoid a drop down the standards.

Two reported potential buyers dropped out of the running over the weekend, while a reported bid from former baseball star Mike Piazza never materialised.

A statement on the club's official website said: “The administrators of Parma FC, Dr Angelo Anedda and Dr Alberto Guion, communicated that as of 14.00 today, June 22 2015, no offers have been received for the sporting rights of the club.

“In the coming hours the administrators will meet with the creditor’s committee and the bankruptcy judge Dr Pietro Rogato to make the necessary arrangements for the bankruptcy proceedings.”

Parma were relegated from the Italian top flight last season after finishing at the bottom of the table.

During their stay in Serie A, the Ducali never won the league, but have finished second and claimed two UEFA Cup trophies during the 1990s.

They qualified for European football during the 2014/15 season, but were denied entry in Europa League after a late tax payment of roughly €300,000.

Mariga struggled with a knee injury and in successive season, Inter loaned him to Spanish La Liga side Real Sociedad and later Parma — the club he left for Inter. His football development was to be hampered in the 2012-13 season with a niggling knee injury that kept him on the sidelines for the better part of the year.
