New Sofapaka forward Kevin Omondi opened his goal-scoring account for Batoto ba Mungu with a clinical finish in their 1-0 international friendly win over visiting Zambian side Power Dynamos at the Nyayo National Stadium yesterday.

The match started on a low tempo and it was the Gotv Shield Champions who threatened first on the half-hour mark through Omondi, but the former Gor Mahia striker was denied by the bar.

However, with three minutes to the break, Omondi, a thorn in the Zambians' defence, combined well with Enock Agwanda who beat an offside trap and delivered perfectly to the box for Omondi to slot home.

Dynamos responded immediately and could have levelled before halftime, but David Okello saved Julius Situmbeko’s spot-kick after Willis Ouma fouled Felix Sunzu in the area.

The visitors came out into the second half more energised and searching for an equaliser, but the Kenyan Premier League side’s defence stood tall with captain Felly Mulumba making an off-the-line clearance to deny Situmbeko a goal in the 62nd minute.

IMPRESSIVE DISPLAY

This was the Dynamos' second friendly match after trouncing Gor Mahia 3-0 on Sunday at the same venue.

Sofapaka coach Sam Timbe praised his players for an impressive display.

“We’ve played very well against a strong team. The win is a morale booster as we prepare for the continental. From the performance, it’s evident the new signings have already gelled with the rest of the team. We are still planning for more friendlies before hosting FC Platinum,” said Timbe.

Commenting on Omondi’s impact and performance since joining the team, the Ugandan said: “I think he had a good performance today and I am happy for his goal. If he continues like this, he’s going to be a key figure on our team.”

Both teams were using the match as part of their preparations for the upcoming CAF Confederations Cup matches. Sofapaka will take on Zimbabwean side Platinum FC on February 13 as Dynamos travel to Sudan to face National Club of Khartoum on the same day.
