Transporters off the track in Coast parking order protest

A long-running matter that has driven PointBlank readers at the Coast up the wall is the haphazard parking of trucks in residential areas and on the roadside.

Such recklessness goes beyond the bounds of inconvenience and turn into a risk. Indeed, in our editions of March 16 (Clean chaotic Coast estate) and March 10 (Somebody should send such careless motorists packing), we called for parking order.

Reverse gear

In response, the National Environment Management Authority drew our attention to efforts by Mombasa Municipal Council to set up parking yards for heavy commercial vehicles at Kibarani, Changamwe, Miritini and Magongo (Municipal Council sorting out chaotic parking, April 1).

But it appears Kenya Transport Association is none too pleased with these moves and has called for a strike.

We note that while the association does not entirely oppose introduction of the parking yards, it has issues with the process of setting up the facilities and the fees.

These can be thrashed out.

What is undesirable is engaging the reverse gear and returning to chaotic parking.
