Stop motorcycle menace

Forget matatus, motorcycles are the latest menace on our roads — and thing could get worse if not checked, says PointBlank regular contributor, Mr Murimi Mwaure. He claims the influx of motorcycles has inspired many riders to graduate from bicycles, without the necessary skills.

"They should be aware the Traffic Act does not afford them preferential treatment. Police should also know this," he says.

To put this in perspective, Mwaure says the law does not allow motorcyclists to weave between cars and change lanes at will or ride on pavements.

"Of particular concern is putting the lives of pedestrians at risk by riding on pavements. I see this in Nairobi everyday, and it is probably because the city council and the police condone the reckless habit," he says.

Mwaure would also like Traffic Police Commandant Aggrey Adoli and the Kenya Revenue Authority to explain how so many riders are on the road, "yet we rarely see such big numbers in driving schools". No wonder so many are involved in accidents, he claims.

"Unless the situation is managed, it will get out of hand," warns Mwaure.
