Kenya Police will contirbute five players to the national boxing team that begins residential training next week ahead of the World Boxing Championships in Kazakhstan from October 11-27.
The policemen are light fly Peter Mungai, Benson Gicharu (bantam), light heavyweight Elly Ajowi and super heavyweights Charles Okoth and Peter Opudi.
Kenya Prisons has three boxers in Dennis Okoth (light welter), Rayton Okwiri (welter) and Daniel Shitsia (heavyweight), while Kenya Defence Forces has Simon Mulinge (flyweight) and Nickson Abaka in the middleweight category.
Nakuru ABC, which produced some of the finest boxers in Kenya’s boxing history in the 1970s and 1980, has John Kariuki in the lightweight.
The Amateur Boxing Association’s First Vice Chairman Albert Matito, who is the team’s head coach, said the federation’s executive committee meets tomorrow to deliberate on the programme for the World Championships.
Matito, who was optimistic of posting good results at the global championships, said some of his players gained good exposure from last week’s Africa Invitational Championships in Port Louis, Mauritius.
The six-day competition, which was as a training session for players was attended by Mauritius, Botswana, South Africa and Cameroon. The World Championships will also act as a qualifier for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Matito will be assisted by George ‘Foreman’ Onyango as assistant coach and deputies Patrick Maina (Kenya Prisons) and Patrick Wamweya. The second qualifier for the Rio Olympics will likely be held in Rabat, Morocco, next year.
