Regaining mobility through physical therapy

By Bob Otieno

Doctors often prescribe physical rehabilitation once one has undergone a surgery or recovered from an injury.

This is what it entails. First, consider your daily routine, level of activities, physical fitness and extent of injury and surgery. Next, find out the activity you need to be engaged in to get your body back in good working order.

For instance, if physiotherapy is recommended, you may need a physiotherapist to design a physical rehabilitation programme that would address your unique injury.

Physiotherapy or physical therapy is a health care profession concerned with human movement. It provides techniques to help for speedy recovery and complication free return to normal life.

The treatments help manage the effect of illness, accidents and disabilities that can include regaining strength, relearning skills or finding new ways of doing day-to-day activities.

To get rid of muscle tenancy or immobility, a physiotherapist may suggest stretches, exercises, heat therapy, massage or traction and such things alone or they may be coupled and grouped as well as per the condition.

For managing chronic headaches or muscle ache, sometimes painkiller is effective but they have limitations and side effects as well but physiotherapy is a great remedy for these problems.

Before you embark on it, it would also be helpful to research on it, what it entails, and everything there is to know about it.

The road towards recovery using physiotherapy may seem long, tiring and yielding slow results. A patient may get impatient, anxious, angry and frustrated.

To avoid this, have a positive mind and embrace patience throughout the journey.

A support group of people in similar conditions may also help to make the journey more bearable and even fun.

It would also help to have a close friend or a spouse if you are married to help you through the journey. They could encourage you along the way and help you monitor your progress and celebrate the milestones.

A second party helps to monitor your performance, how fast or slow you are making progress or if you have slowed down.
