Preventing injury during exercise

By NELLY OBADHA

Injuries can occur anytime during your exercise. They are usually painful and can easily incapacitate you from going about your business every day

Tips to help you avoid such a situation:

Wear the right clothing—  Every item of clothing in your wardrobe was not created for exercise. Your exercising wardrobe should be made up of loose fitting clothes. This is to enable you maximum movement and comfort when performing your routine. Restrictive clothing can make you twist and turn in wrong ways, causing injury. Wear absorbent clothing to help absorb the sweat you produce and also cool you down.

Consult a personal trainer and physician —

Before embarking on your fitness mission as a beginner, you need to consult a trainer to give you advice on how to go about exercising. A trainer will help on what to do and not do during exercise. Your physician will advise on how much you can exert your body and in case of injuries, both parties will help in the healing process.

Tune into your body —

Your body can always give you an indication that something is not right. Be on high alert for any odd pains that you may experience and stop exercising until you are given a go ahead by the doctor or your trainer.

Warm up and cooling down —

These are two processes of exercising that are usually neglected. Warming up before you exercise helps your body adjust from its normal state to the exercise mode. Cooling down brings you back from the state of full exertion to your normal body status. The gradual transition from warming up, exercising and cooling down can go a long way to prevent injuries.

Eat and drink before exercise —

You need food to fuel your body as you go about exercising. Food provides you with the energy you need for each workout session. Ensure you have eaten two hours before you start exercising. Always have a water bottle with you to prevent dehydration.

Rest and more rest —

After a whole day of activities, ensure your body gets enough rest and build up the worn out tissues and muscles.

In case of any injuries, consult your doctor, trainer and take some time off for full recovery.
