Outspoken Kenyan blogger Robert Alai has announced plans to run for political office during the 2022 elections. Speaking to Radio Maisha’s Billy Miya and Mbaruk Mwalimu on ‘Celebrity Hot Seat’, Alai said that his decision to run for a parliamentary seat was informed by voters' wishes.

“I am going to view for the Nyando MP seat in the coming elections,” said Alai, adding that running for public office is for “service and not greed.”

In the interview, Alai further disputed notions that he’s a gun for hire to the highest bidder, adding that he’s not a blogger by choice but circumstances.

“I don’t get paid (for exposes). I have done a lot of free work and I think it's time they started paying. I have made names for people but I didn’t see a need to charge them. I'm not a blogger, I'm a computer scientist- I only write because I have an opinion,” he told the duo.

HSC commendation

Addressing the Head of State Commendation (HSC) awarded to him by President Uhuru Kenyatta, Alai denied claims he paid for it while insisting that he deserved the accolade.

“I'm not elected but I influence society. Whether it's positive or negative, it depends on who you ask. We have saved and changed lives. Haters started talking trash simply because I was awarded alongside Githeriman,” said Alai, adding that the title does not come with a monetary reward but a medal and letter from the president.

Indian name

He also spoke on the origin of his second name, saying his grandfather was christened Alai by a prominent Indian.

“Hence, I'm an Indian-African.”
