Idris Elba fuels James Bond rumour with tweet

News
 Idris Elba

He's long been tipped to take over from Daniel Craig as the next actor to play secret agent James Bond.

And now Idris Elba has dropped his biggest hint yet, tweeting a not-so cryptic reference to the legendary film series.

The actor posted a selfie alongside an obvious nod to 007's iconic line: “The name's Bond, James Bond.”

He wrote: “My name's Elba, Idris Elba.”

Fans were whipped up into a frenzy by the tweet, with many calling for him to land the coveted role.

One wrote: “I might actually feel compelled to watch a bond film if the rumours are true!”

Another posted: “Might just be teasing. Maybe he's in talks/negotiating a deal? I will wait for official confirmation before celebrating, lol. Here's hoping tho!”

Meanwhile, one fan begged: “Don’t tease us like this, Idris!”

The upcoming 25th instalment of the James Bond film series is likely to be Daniel Craig's last, after he previously insisted he wouldn't make another.

Meanwhile, Idris's tweet comes as director Antoine Fuqua reportedly claimed “it is time” for a non-white actor to take on the leading role, adding: “It will happen eventually.”

Having supposedly spoken with Bond producer Barbara Broccoli, Antoine went on to earmark Idris, 45, as a top contender for the role once Daniel finally departs.

“Idris could do it if he was in shape," Antoine said, according to the Daily Star.

"You need a guy with physically strong presence. Idris has that.”

However, a rep for Antoine went on to deny claims he had discussed the role with Barbara, calling the casting rumours: “All made up stuff”.
