Is Dj Sonnia fighting for "Queen of the decks" title?

Features
                                           Dj Sonia is fast rising

Sonnia's world

Pulse: How did you venture into the deejaying world?

Sonnia: I shared my interest with my two deejay friends, Dan Mixa and Ruff Cut who taught me the techniques for three months. I took leave from work then and enrolled in Genius Entertainment Academy, last year, to sharpen my skills where DJ Sadic taught me.

P: Is it something you always aspired to do?

S: I have always had passion for music and since I am not good at singing, I knew that I would do something related to music.

P: You work at Nonini’s ProHabo Entertainment. How did you land the opportunity to be part of Nonini’s DJs?

S: I once uploaded my mix on Facebook and Nonini, who has been my long-time friend, called me and he was shocked that I could deejay. And that is how I got the job.

P: Most of the time, deejaying is a night job associated with men...

S: It is a job like any other. I think it is all in the mind. However, I would say it takes a tough lady to do it.

P: You play in clubs, I mean, isn’t it a rough world out there?

S: Like I said, it is all about how you take it and treat the challenges. You can use negativity for good, and since there are few female DJs in Kenya, people are impressed when they see a female DJ.

P: Kenyan DJs are said to promote Nigerian music more than local music...

S: It is true that a lot of DJs play Nigerian music but it is not their fault. When most people who request for songs, request for Nigerian songs, a deejay is left with little else to do.

P: But DJs influence music trends, right?

S: True. I think DJs have to first embrace local music for the public to do so.

P: Why isn’t that the case and what can DJs do to save the local productions from the influx of the Western beat?

S: If all DJs agree to play more of local content, people will start supporting the music. If deejays really decide the trends, which is the case most times, then things will change. I think Kenyans must learn to appreciate themselves more.

P: It is said you have beef with a gospel deejay by the name Queen of the Decks...

S: Chris Adwar made me a drop last year in August with the statement: “I am Deejay Sonnia, Queen of the Decks.” I have been planning to make customised T-shirts with the tagline. But recently one deejay started calling herself the Queen of the Decks. She has created her own drop and T-shirts with the same tagline. I would wish to have the name for myself.

P: Is that what the beef is all about?

S: It is not serious beef as one would want to look at it, but really, why would someone call herself a name that is someone else’s?

P: It’s not like you have patented it, or have you?

S: It’s not like this gives me sleepless nights...

P: Nonini’s ProHabo is a big showbiz label. How is it working with him?

S: It is amazing and at the same time challenging. I get great opportunities to spin in major showbiz events and meet great people.

P: Fill us in about your family background.

S: I come from a small family; just me and my brother, Dennis Muchiri. We lost our parents in 2002 in a car accident, and after that episode, our grandparents took us in.

P: That must have been very tragic. How did you get over the tragedy?

S: I don’t think I have ever gotten over that and I have never spoken to anyone about it too. I miss them a lot of times and I would love them to be here. I have always wanted a mother figure and I think of how it would be when they were still alive.

P: You are a single mother and at the same time you take care of your brother. It must be tough living like this. Does your deejaying job pay enough for you to meet the bills?

S: God’s grace is sufficient, it is life and I have to be strong for my brother and my baby. The two are my inspiration.

P: Are you in a love relationship?

S: No. But there is something developing between me and a guy and that is all I can say. My beautiful daughter Breana is eight now and she is happy with all I manage for her.

P: It means the father of your child is not in the picture. What happened?

S: To us, he does not exist. Let us just leave that at that.

P: You have so many tattoos. What is the inspiration?

S: I have 18 tattoos and most of them are inspired by my daughter while others are just experimental.
