Deputy President William Ruto has warned that the government will deal decisively with people who cause violence in the country.

Ruto said the Jubilee administration would not allow criminals to destroy property and cause mayhem in the country.

The Deputy President said Kenyans should resist politically instigated violence and incitement that he said had threatened to create ethnic divisions.

“This is not a country of violence. We appeal to Kenyans to resist violence. We will deal with those who are causing chaos and destroying properties of others. I appeal to all Kenyans to resist violence and incitement,” Ruto said.

The DP said he was confident today’s presidential election petition ruling would bring to an end rising political temperatures and mark a new chapter for Kenyans.

Speaking at ACK St Mark’s Church Mukui parish in Kiambu County where he attended a Sunday service, the DP called on Kenyans to pray for President Uhuru Kenyatta and the entire country.

“We are confident that by God’s grace the country will move forward. We want to unite the people of Kenya. We need to stand together to resist anarchy, violence and ethnic division,” the DP said.

Rule of law

The DP said the violence witnessed in parts of Nairobi claimed a number of lives would not be allowed to continue and called on the Opposition to uphold the rule of law.

The DP said threats and intimidation by the Opposition would not help them clinch power.

A section of Mount Kenya region leaders who had accompanied the DP endorsed him for the presidency in 2022.

Led by Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu, the leaders blamed National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga for the violence that rocked part of Nairobi yesterday.

“This country was peaceful when Raila was away in the United States (US). We are now witnessing violence after his return to the country,” said Governor Waititu.

“We have asked our people including Nairobi Business people to exercise restraint. But we urge the government to hold culpable some elements in NASA for causing chaos,” he added.

The Jubilee legislators accused Raila of seeking help from foreign powers in his quest for presidency.
