NAIROBI, KENYA: A stray bullet has killed a girl in Mathare North. Residents have accused the police of using live bullets during protests that have followed the announcement of Uhuru Kenyatta as winner of the 2017 elections.

The girl has been identified as Moraa Nyarangi. A nine year old learner at Mathare Primary School. The police are yet to collect the body four hours later.

According to an eye witness who spoke to Standard Digital, Nyarangi was on Saturday morning killed by stray bullet in Nairobi’s Mathare North area.

According to Marbel Achieng, the girl was on a balcony of a flat when the stray bullet struck her, killing her on the spot.

“The girl was on a balcony when she was hit by the stray bullet, this is in Mathare North Area 2 next to Soko Mawe, Osiepe Bar,” Achieng told Standard Digital in a phone interview.

“There is still tension in the area, and we don’t know when it will end.”

MSF East Africa said as of 1pm on Saturday, it had treated 19 people since last night in Mathare.

In other areas such as Kibera slums, the police fired teargas early Saturday to disperse protesting youths.

The police have been engaging protesters mainly from Nairobi slums in running battles following the re-election of President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto.

The Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission (IEBC) declared Uhuru the winner on Friday evening. Uhuru got 8,203,290 votes (54.27 percent) against Raila Odinga’s 6,762,224 votes (44.74 percent).
