Some 118,000 teachers will today start undergoing training on Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Chief Executive Officer Nancy Macharia said those targeted during this month's training are head teachers from regular schools and Special Needs Education (SNE) teachers.

At least two teachers from Grade 4 (regular and SNE) and two teachers from Grade 1-2 for CBC mathematics will also take part in the Sh1 billion training that kicks off countrywide.

“The commission intends to prepare teachers for eventual re-opening of schools through training, capacity building, sensitization and induction programmes,” said Dr Macharia.

The training schedule says that the sessions, which will be done both face to face and virtually, will end December 22.

Target groups

Virtual training will be done between December 9 and 16 and it will target Curriculum Support Officers (CSOs) and champions on CBC mathematics content for Grade 1-3.

Training of Special Needs Education CSO’s and CBC champions will also be done online.

Dr Macharia said the face to face training will start December 17 to 22 and will be done at zonal level targeting teachers.

Last year, the commission trained 339,752 teachers under the CBC at a cost of Sh400 million.

The training starts barely a week to the lapse of application deadline for recruitment of 7,000 intern teachers.

All interested candidates have until Monday next week to complete and submit their online applications.

Macharia said the commission is hiring the interns as part of the Covid-19 mitigation measures ahead of January reopening of schools.
