The Government plans to hire 1,000 TVET tutors by April to curb shortage in the institutions.

At least 2,700 are needed to make TVET a success.

Kevit Desai, the PS in the State Department of Vocational and Technical Education (TVET), said the funds needed to hire the trainers had been factored in the next supplementary budget.

Professional trainers

Mr Desai urged the institutions' Board of Governors to find ways of getting professional trainers.

“The boards can help identify skills, which can be of use in an innovative way to transfer knowledge to trainees,” said Dr Desai.

He spoke in Kisumu yesterday when he met the board of the Bungoma-based Matili Technical Training Institute.

Judith Sande, the Matili Technical Training Institute principal, said the institutions lacked funding.

“Through networking we can get funding for physical development and human resource from international agencies who are ready and willing to invest in technical training,” said Ms Sande.

Desai, in response to Ms Sande's concerns, said the Government was aware of the challenge.

Desai said the department was determined to train one million young people every year.
