University of Nairobi suspends 62 students including Sonu contender Mike Jacobs

Nairobi, Kenya: The University of Nairobi has suspended 62 students including Sonu leader contender Mike Jacobs over violence and destruction experienced at institution two weeks ago.

The university was closed indefinitely as the students protested the results of elections of their Sonu leaders that announced Babu Owino as the winner.

The students burnt down their Sonu offices and hostels in protest. The affected students have been asked to pick their suspension letters from the main campus. Vice Chancellor Prof Peter Mbithi put up an advert in the main newspapers with the names of those suspended.

He said the university has initiated disciplinary process against the 62 for participating in student unrest and destruction of public property.

“They are therefore required to collect their suspension letters from the Registrar, Students’Affairs latest by Friday, April 15,” said Mbithi.

The university was Tuesday closed indefinitely following students’ protests over their union elections.

The news of the closure caught some students off guard forcing some to burn their hostels.

Jacobs contested the election results that put Owino ahead of him.
