Kenya teachers’ unions at crossroads as polls deadline closer

NAIROBI: Teachers are staring at the death of unions if they fail to conduct their elections as envisaged in the law. The unions are now exploring options to conduct their polls before the March 31 deadline.

Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) said it will remain a ‘paper tiger’ with no powers to engage the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) on the collective bargaining agreement.

Union Secretary General Akello Misori (above) yesterday said despite the challenges they are facing, a solution will be reached soon and unions the will conduct elections.

Sources told The Standard that the Kenya National Union of Teachers will hold its branch elections between February 3 and 19. Knut Secretary General Wilson Sossion could not be reached for comment.
