2 girls in Kilifi sit KCPE exam from labour ward

KENYA: Two Standard Eight pupils gave birth while sitting their last Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination papers yesterday.

The girls developed labour pains during exams and had to be rushed to Kilifi County Referral Hospital, where they delivered.

Records at the hospital show that some 207 underage girls have given birth at the facility this year alone.

The number of girls who have delivered while undertaking their national examination in the county stands at three. A Form Four candidate at Ganze Girls Secondary School also delivered before finishing her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examination.

The County Director of Education Dickson ole Keis said that all the three were able to finish their exams from the maternity wards.

"At least three pregnant candidates in Kilifi County had to be rushed to hospital after they developed labour pains," said Mr Keis.

He added: "Soon after the girls delivered, proper plans were put in place and examination papers were taken to them, and they successfully wrote their exams from the maternity ward."
