Nairobi Aviation College students in Kisumu boycott classes

KISUMU: Over 500 students of Nairobi Aviation College have disrupted learning at the institution’s Kisumu Campus protesting over an expose on fake certificates.

The students who stormed into the principal’s office declined to settle in classes and demanded for an official address from the institution’s management.

The students claimed the management had directed them to get to class and proceed with learning with no word after the NTV’s documentary ‘Certificates of Doom’ which detailed how the institution had allegedly been awarding fake certificates.

The mid-morning riot disrupted activities at Mini Mall Shopping Centre, the institution’s location at the heart of Kisumu town.

The students who addressed the press said they had been disturbed after the expose’ and called for a quick settlement of the matter so as to allow the students to proceed with learning.

Valentine, one of the students said students who had reported to the institution had expressed fears that the institution would be closed by the government over the story, a situation which could ruin their future.

“Since the airing of the documentary we have not been able to settle. The management should at least address us so as to let us know the way forward. We cannot sit in class if we don’t know what we are reading for,” she said.

Some of the students called for legal action against the perpetrators of the fake certificate schemes but spare the innocent.

“Those involved are the ones who should be dealt with. Some of us read genuinely and we will not accept any blanket condemnation by anybody,” said a student.

They however promised to keep off classes until the institution’s management addresses them over the matter.

The lecturers at the institution locked themselves in their offices and avoided the press, calling on the students to wait for communication from the headquarters in Nairobi.
