KOICA, Seoul National University, FAWE partner to improve quality of education

NAIROBI, KENYA: Korea International Co-operation Agency (KOICA), which was established on April 1st, 1991, is the Korean Government’s Organization for ODA implementation.

KOICA provides the Kenyan government with bilateral Grant Aid primarily in the areas of Water Development and Sanitation, Education and Health. In addition, KOICA focuses on improving administrative capacity and also supports the improvement of public systems through capacity building.

Seoul National University recently partnered with the Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) for the project ‘Teacher Capacity Building and Professional Development in ICT’. KOICA supported this Project through funding that successfully saw 500 Kenyan teachers receive training in ICT this year. This capacity building program was aimed at improving the teachers’ teaching skills, and was further consolidated with the donation of 30 computers.

In a ceremony attended by the Korean Ambassador to Kenya Kim Chan Woo, FAWE Acting Executive Director Ms. Hendrina Doroba, Seoul National University’s Prof Kim Kiseok, KOICA Kenya Office Resident Representative Mrs. Moon Jung Choi, Ministry of Education officials, and other guests, the Program and computer facility were officially launched on November 12, 2013.

The Korean Ambassador noted that quality education in the country could not be achieved without well trained teachers to help students in the learning process. He was pleased that that the Project would help in motivating and encouraging the Kenyan teachers as they go through the important journey of imparting knowledge and creating good citizens out of Kenya’s children.

“This Project is a clear indicator of the good bilateral relations between Kenya and Korea, and confirmation of the latter’s continued support to Kenya in its endeavour towards achieving its development goals,” Mr Kim said.
