Kemsa: Kenyans want nothing but the truth

The alleged corruption scandal at Kemsa involving Covid-19 funds has, understandably, generated a lot of anger.

Corruption is Kenya’s second name and hardly a month passes before a major scandal being reported. Billions upon billions of shillings belonging to the taxpayer go down the fathomless pit of corruption every year.

But while the looting spree over the years, and more so the recent ones, has been shocking, the allegations of graft at Kemsa have left Kenyans dumb-founded. And for a good reason. Kenya is going through one of its roughest patches since independence. Thousands of people have contracted the coronavirus which has killed more than 500 people so far. Many Kenyans have lost their jobs and the economy is in tatters.

Amid such a desperate situation, it is depressing to hear that some people have stolen cash meant for the war against Covid-19. Kenyans' anger is justified. Tempers are also flaring among leaders, with Deputy President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila exchanging verbal brickbats.

ODM wants an audit carried out first and has lashed out at Ruto and the media over the alleged scandal.

This is a matter of great public interest. The DCI and EACC know best how to investigate such matters. Whether they start with or end with the audit is upon them. They are the experts.

What Kenyans want is the truth and severe punishment for anyone who has pilfered even a penny at this difficult time.
