Kangundo man captured in video assaulting disabled woman arrested

The suspect captured assaulting a disabled woman on a viral video was on Sunday arrested in Kangundo, Mahcakos county.

The suspect was arrested after angry Kenyans led by Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua demanded for his arrest for clobbering a helpless woman.

According to a statement by Governor Mutua, the suspect was arrested on Sunday and will be arraigned next week to face assault charges.

“The young man has been arrested will be arraigned in court. As a society, we should not just sit and watch abuse of others among us,” Mutua tweeted on Sunday.

Police launched a manhunt for the suspect after the viral clip sparked ire among Kenyans on social media who described his action as an assault.

Earlier, Mutua demanded for the arrest of the man after a shocking viral video in which he was captured repeatedly clobbering the disabled woman.

Governor Mutua took to his official Twitter handle to condemn the clip and assured angry netizens that action must be taken against the suspect said to be a waiter at a Kangundo hotel.

“I have watched with disgust, a video alleged from a restaurant in Kangundo, of a young man assaulting a woman. I am shocked at this violent act. The young man will have to be arrested and jailed,” he said

Mutua also condemned those captured in the video staring helplessly and others laugh as the suspect flogged and dragged his victim without any help, saying they too should be punished.

"Those captured in the video watching without doing or saying anything also need to be disciplined," the angry governor said.

The 30-second clip showing a man repeatedly flogging a disabled woman with a whip is alleged to have been captured in a restaurant in Kangundo town in Machakos County.

From the clip, the suspect also kicked and slapped the woman, before dragging her on the floor as some women in aprons are seen watching from a distance as others laughedas they passed by.

The victim, however, did not react as she was beaten, molested and dragged by her tormentor.

It is not clear from the clip what wrong the woman committed to warrant such mistreatment and when the clip was taken.

Some reports indicate the woman was hospitalised following the beating but was later discharged and is yet to be traced.
