Makueni MCA charged with ethnic contempt

Makueni nominated MCA Mbula Mutula in the dock in Makueni law court where she was charged with ethnic contempt.

An MCA was on Monday charged with spreading ethnic hatred on social media during 2017 repeat presidential elections.

Wiper nominated MCA Mbula Mutula (pictured) is alleged to have made the post on Facebook, contravening the National Cohesion and Integration Act.

Last Thursday, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations officials were unable to arrest Ms Mutula when they went to seek her at the assembly premises.

On Monday, she presented herself to the National Cohesion and Integration Commission offices in Nairobi accompanied by her lawyer, where she was questioned.

She was later taken to Makueni Law Courts, and appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate James Mwaniki.

The court heard that on November 19, 2017, while at an unknown place, Mutula, through her Facebook account, wrote that an outlawed militant group was killing Opposition supporters.

She also wrote that the country's top leaders were happy about it.

The post also made reference to a certain tribe that she said was "cursed". She urged Kenyans to boycott businesses owned by the tribe's people.

Prosecutors interpreted the post to have the possibility of stirring ethnic hatred against the tribe she mentioned.

She denied all charges. Mr Mwaniki released her on a Sh800,000 bond or a cash bail of Sh400,000. The case will be mentioned on 15 April.
