The Government will spend Sh93 million to construct two modern open-air markets at Kanyakine and Ntharene in Imenti South District.

Meru County Council Chairman Gideon Kimathi said the Local Government has already released the funds for building to commence immediately.

He said the money would be used to build market stalls, toilets and bathrooms for traders and residents.

“The residents will get two modern markets to deliver and sell their produce and avoid the inconvenience of selling in the hot sun or heavy rains,” said the chairman.

Mr Kimathi said Ntharene market serves thousands of people occasioning the need to upgrade it.

He urged the local community and especially the youth to fully support the initiative by providing labour and conducive working environment.

He said the markets are also meant to economically uplift the living standards of locals by providing them with a convenient place to sell their farm produce. “Those travelling from Nairobi and Mombasa to transact business can take a shower after a hard day’s work because bathrooms will be available at the new modern open air markets,” said Kimathi.

The announcement to build the markets comes barely a week after traders from Ntharene market protested against the lack of toilets and vowed never to pay cess until ablution blocks are built.
