Butcher ‘cut up girlfriend into pieces to feed to the vultures’

A butcher who allegedly chopped up his pregnant girlfriend and fed her to vultures has been arrested.

Jose Miguel Tamayo is accused of taking her mutilated body to a nature reserve near Madrid and feeding her to the wild animals.

The 32-year-old was said to be furious his partner, Carolina Bernal Gomez, had become pregnant, police believe.

Officers also claimed their relationship had been strained for quite a while. After one heated row, Tamayo is thought to have physically assaulted 30-year-old Ms Gomez.

When he realised the South American expat was dead, he allegedly butchered her body into bite-sized pieces to hide any evidence of the crime.

Juan Pablo Herranz, a Spanish minister overseeing the case, said: ‘The victim had not lodged any complaint of ill-treatment at any time. It seems as if it was a spur of the moment killing.’ Police have said they were suspicious because Tamayo waited several weeks before he declared she was missing.

When he was interviewed by officers, he gave contradictory statements about their relationship and her absence.

Ms Gomez’s remains were allegedly abandoned in the Sierra de Guadarrama national park, 40km outside Madrid.

Vultures actively search for flesh and can sniff out dead animals from up to a mile away. They then circle downwards until they find the aroma’s origin.
