Machakos MCAs attack each other with rotten eggs

MACHAKOS COUNTY: Hell broke loose Monday at the Machakos County Assembly as two rival groups of members of the County Assembly engaged in physical fighting.

The reading of the 2014/2015 budget had to be temporally suspended for more than one hour following the skirmishes.

MCAs allied to Machakos County Governor Dr Alfred Mutua found themselves on the receiving end as their opponents attacked them using rotten eggs and chairs.

The speaker of the assembly Benard Mungata was not spared either as he left the chamber smelling stinky from the rotten eggs attack.

It took the intervention of sergeant at arms and his team moments to separate the warring groups as the house business collapsed.

The opposing MCAs argued it was illegal to hold the session from a small room within the county assembly offices. The official chamber is under renovation.

A contingent of armed police led by the new Machakos OCPD Joe Lekuta was called in to ensure security prevailed within the assembly compound.

When the assembly resumed, the Speaker named ten MCAs perceived to have been behind the chaos and suspended them for the next three sittings.

The suspended leaders dismissed the suspension and said no amount of intimidation from any quarter will cow them from championing the rights of Machakos County residents.

They blamed the crisis on a few individuals working for the governor whom they asked to steer clear of the running of the assembly affairs.
