Eldoret students protest after paying fees to unregistered college

Hundreds of prospective students from the North Rift region who enrolled at a private college in Eldoret are counting heavy losses after discovering that the institution was not registered by the National Industrial Training Authority.

Some of the distraught students are said to have enrolled for Certificate and Diploma in nursing, dental, and caregiving courses at the college, which has branches across the country.

The students held a demonstration at the Eldoret police station to report the matter and demand a refund of the fees they had paid to the proprietor of the institute.

This was after they discovered that the college, which has been charging between Sh50,000 and Sh170,000 per student, was not registered by the concerned authority.

"It is unfortunate for someone to use our money and enrich himself. The majority of us sold our parents' domestic animals and other reliable commodities to raise fees, "said a student who asked not to be named.

The students disrupted learning programmes at the college, which is located within Eldoret's central business district.

Tutors at the college were forced to abandon lecture halls and flee on foot for fear of being attacked by the irate students who were marching along the town streets before reporting the matter to the police.

Uasin Gishu Police Commander Benjamin Mwanthi said detectives have launched investigations into the activities of the said college.

He asked the students to record their statements with the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) officers.
