Four Chinese deported over caning of restaurant worker

Four Chinese who were arrested after one of them was caught on video caning a Kenyan worker were on Wednesday night deported back to China.

The four left aboard a China Southern Airlines flight that departed from the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport at about 10pm.

This followed a court order issued earlier that stated that Deng Hailan, Chang Yueping, Ou Qiang and Yu Ling be deported.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) who were holding the foreigners handed them over to Immigration Department officers who deported them.

An order for their deportation had previously been halted by the High Court after the four suspects filed an application challenging it.

On Tuesday, the lawyer representing them said his clients were ready to be deported back to their home country.

The lawyer said his clients had suffered and were ready to go back to China as had been ordered by the State.

They were arrested after a video showing one of them whipping a Kenyan worker for allegedly being late for work.

Police said the Chinese had been involved in degrading and violating fundamental rights thus breaching their condition of stay and their case for deportation was ripe.

Three of the foreigners were found to be holding expired visas while the fourth one was holding a visitor’s visa but without a work permit.

Chinese Embassy in Nairobi asked police to investigate the incident and take action according to Kenyan laws.
