Religious leaders express their support for BBI report

Religious leaders under the umbrella of the Inter-Religious Council of Kenya (IRCK) have expressed support for the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI).

Speaking during the second Religious Leaders Convocation, which concluded in Nairobi yesterday, the leaders lauded the launch of the BBI report, commending it for contributing to national dialogue and progress towards attaining national unity.

They noted that the BBI task force included many recommendations from religious leaders in its final report.

“We have recognised that there are many recommendations that have potential to transform Kenya to a better nation,” noted Rev Martin Kivuva, the chair of IRCK’s Dialogue Reference Group, which launched its own report on achieving national unity yesterday.

Speaking at the event, Sheikh Abdalla Kamwana of the Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims affirmed that the leaders agree with the BBI task force's recommendations, including dignifying the opposition, providing tax relief for small businesses by young Kenyans, strengthening devolution, and the task force’s stance on fighting corruption.

However, in spite of their support, the leaders also expressed skepticism over certain proposals.

According to them, the proposal to create the post of prime minister still requires more thought and consultation to ensure that its creation has the support of Kenyans.
