Drunk motorists lose permits as NTSA acts

Seven motorists have had their driving licences suspended for driving while under the influence of alcohol.

This came as the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) stepped up measures to reduce the number of road carnage during the festive season.

A statement from the authority said the drivers’ licences will be suspended for between one to two years and that they will not be expected to drive during the period of suspension.

“We hope that suspending their licences will send a warning and strong message to those who are tempted to drink and drive. Our teams are currently supporting the traffic police in enhancing road safety during this festive season,” read the statement from NTSA.

The authority also suspended the licences of 11 Public Service Vehicles for 30 days over violation of regulations that guides their operations in various routes.

The PSVs are operated by Marimba Sacco, Mbukinya Sacco, Ongata Rongai Sacco, Kenya Poa Sacco, Unified Sacco, Nazigi Sacco, Prestige Sacco, Nawasuku Sacco and Latema Sacco.

“The PSV operators have been found to be in violation of public transport rules and regulations despite an earlier warning against contravening conditions of their licences,” the authority said.

The vehicles are said to have failed to provide a data storage system which is capable of storing data on their speed, location and history of their  operations within the last 30 days. Others were also found to be operating as tourist service vehicles without valid licences.
