Police bosses meet to plan security during polls

Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet

Top police bosses hold a final meeting in Nairobi today to fine-tune plans to ensure security before and after the elections.

The meeting of regional and county commanders comes in the wake of fears of violence as the polls approach.

Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet, his deputies Joel Kitili and Samuel Arachi, DCI Ndegwa Muhoro, head of Prisons Department Isaiah Osugo, Kenya Wildlife Service's Kitili Mbathi, Kenya Forest Service's Emilio Mugo, and National Youth Service's Richard Ndubai are expected at the meeting.

National Intelligence Service boss Philip Kameru is expected at the official opening of the meeting at Safari Park Hotel.

Officials say the meeting will assess the various strategies that have been laid to see if they are working. "We will be informed on various issues that have developed," said one officer.

Boinnet said the police bosses have been holding regular meetings with other national security agencies "to create synergies and develop contingency plans".

"We are committed to providing a conducive environment for voters and aspirants to exercise their democratic right before, during, and after the General Election on August 8," he said.
