An argument about a football match during break time turned tragic when a student was hit fatally on the head.

Police in Bomet have arrested a Form Three student following his school mate's death from an injury inflicted by a blunt object.

The suspect was arrested at Kipkurion Secondary School after his colleague died at Tenwek Mission Hospital where he was being treated.

The two are said to have differed during a football game. An argument ensued and the suspect hit the other student with a blunt object on the back of the head.

Students who witnessed the incident said it was a 'normal' argument over a football game before it degenerated into a fist fight.

Bomet Police boss Samson Rukunga said the parents of the deceased reported the matter to the police, leading to the suspect's arrest.

"We received the report from the parents of the deceased and immediately moved to arrest the student to help us in our investigations," Mr Rukunga told the press in his office.

He said detectives were on the ground collecting more information on the incident to build a case against the suspect.

Police say this is not the first time the suspect, who is currently out on bond, has been mentioned in a school assault case.

According to Mr Rukunga, the suspect's name came up at Kipyosit Secondary School, where he was a student before moving to Kipkurion in Bomet East constituency.

"The suspect seems to be a notorious character. We have discovered that he has another case that is pending," said the police officer.

In the latest incident, the school administrators did not report the matter when it happened.

Instead, they rushed the victim to Longisa County Referral Hospital from where he was referred to Tenwek Mission Hospital for further treatment when his condition grew worse.

The body is lying in the Tenwek Hospital morgue awaiting a postmortem.
