Six staff at a local university in Mombasa were yesterday arraigned in court and charged with six counts.
The charges read; engaging in project without prior planning contrary to section 48 (1) (a) of the anti-corruption and economic crimes act, other counts include willfully failure to comply with the law relating to procurement are alleged to have used their offices to improperly confer a benefit to wit a contract for the purchase of smart TV without following the law relating to procurement.
Some of them were still the staff at the said institution on or about September 22, 2014. The Chairperson and members of the tender committee whose functions concerned the management of public revenue engaged in a project to wit procurement of smart TV sets worth Ksh 4,750,000 without prior planning.
They were arrested on Friday after failing summoned by the Anti- corruption Commission and were later released on police cash bail of Ksh50, 000 each.
“The accused people have been very cooperative and others are still working in the said institution and can easily be traced, moreover, in the matter there would be no evidence to tamper with,” said their Lawyer.
The prosecutor had no objection on the application of bond.
The Chief Magistrate ordered the accused people be released on cash bail of Ksh 200,000 or a bond of ksh 500,000 each with no surety of same amount saying that the matter will involve several stages of investigation and so it will take more time.
The case will mention on August 1.
