A German non-governmental organisation has funded the construction of a resource centre and dormitory to support the education of blind children at Mitoto Primary School in Kiminini constituency.

The Sh10 million resource centre project, supported by Anasse is expected to be complete in the next three months and will be equipped with learning materials for blind and deaf children.

Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony over the weekend, Kiminini MP Chris Wamalwa said: “This is a generous donation and it is encouraging that the organisation has come out to support unprivileged children to access education.”

He said the boarding facility would help blind children pursue their dreams. Dr Wamalwa said the project would be instrumental for the education of physically-challenged children in the region.

The MP asked parents with physically-challenged children to expose them to learning to enable them exploit their talents.

He urged parents not to isolate children with disabilities arguing that such actions deny them the rightful share in the society.

“It is inhumane for parents to isolate children with disabilities by locking them up at homes. Let us free these children to access education and help them nurture their talents to better their future,” he said.

God’s will

He called on the provincial administration and concerned agencies to ensure children with disabilities are supported to develop and enjoy basic needs.

“It is not a sin to give birth to physically-challenged children. It is the will of God and we must respect it. Let us not victimise but support these children because they are human beings like other person,” added Wamalwa

Anasse Regional Co-ordinator Gurlos Ngeno, warned Kenyans against discriminating people with disabilities, saying that they deserve care and support.

Meanwhile, Governor Patrick Khaemba has asked farmers to harvest rainwater during the predicted El Niño rains.

Mr Khaemba said the water would later be used to irrigate farms during the dry season.

Speaking at Kapsara Centre in Trans Nzoia East sub-county during the opening of new offices for the Trans-Counties Savings and Credit Cooperative Society Limited, the county chief said farmers can still reap big from El Niño, despite its destructive nature.

He said coffee, tea, pepper and dairy animal farming will benefit a lot from the rains and discouraged farmers from seeing the El Niño period as a calamity.

Khaemba said the county government would procure over 20 milk coolers to collect milk from farmers so that it can be processed in plants in Kitale.

The Trans-Counties Sacco was started in 1993 with 170 members and now has over 3,000 members.
