Stay away from drugs and alcohol, students told

Students have been urged to shun drugs and alcohol and do as many courses as possible to become self-reliant.

Speaking during the launch of the Youth Chapter of the Meru Professionals Forum at Kariene Primary School, County Secretary Julius Kimathi called upon university and college students not to misuse the Higher Education Loans Board (Helb) and other funds they receive to advance their education.

During the event, Mr Kimathi launched a mentorship programme that will see professionals from the area adopt primary and secondary schools.

Kimathi said it was unfortunate that many students use the monies they get to indulge in alcohol, drugs and other vices.

“The foundation of this nation is the youth. You must shun destructive activities such as illicit brews and drugs, and instead be focused on your academic goals and dream big,” he advised the over 500 youths, drawn from primary and secondary schools, universities and colleges.

He said the era of tribalism is gone, and only the most qualified and suitable will be accorded employment opportunities.

“The only way to succeed is to take advantage of opportunities available.

The Jubilee government has set in place a conducive environment for the youth to thrive,” he said.
