Kenya: Duo in court for theft

Nairobi Chief Magistrate Daniel Ogembo has ordered a former official of New Akamba Unity (NAU) and her lawyer to appear before him today to answer to charges of theft and forgery.

Mr Ogembo directed former NAU Secretary General Salome Syomweu Kinyili and lawyer Peter Kipng'etich Langat to appear in court to answer the charges in a private prosecution case.

NAU Chairman Smith Munyao through lawyer Titus Koceyo accused Ms Kinyili and Mr Langat of defrauding the over 400,000 members of the community based organisation of property valued at over Sh60 million.

NAU has also obtained orders restraining Kinyili from securing a Sh7 billion loan from the National Bank of Kenya without approval by members. High Court Judge Fred Mabeya stopped the bank from granting the loan.
