MOMBASA, KENYA: Top Coast CORD leaders have accused some opposition leaders in the region of betraying CORD and kowtowing to President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto for ‘personal benefit’ as they launched a blistering attack on President Uhuru Kenyatta.
They said on Monday evening in Mombasa that by leaning towards Jubilee the leaders are’ traitors’ who have forgotten historical injustices in Coast.
Less than 24 hours later, Kwale representative Zainab Chidzuga declared that she has no plans to ditch Cord for the ruling coalition refuting claims that she was rallying women voters to President Uhuru Kenyatta's bid for a second term in 2017.
She spoke a day after attending a function in State House with President Uhuru where the president's communication agency quoted her saying she will support Uhuru's presidential bid in 2017.
On Tuesday, Chidzuga claimed her speech in State House was distorted and denied claims that she jumped ship to support Jubilee government insisting she is still in the Cord coalition.
However she said women are going to work with the government of the day for peace.
On Monday, Mombasa governor Hassan Ali Joho, Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar and Changamwe MP Omar Mwinyi accused Uhuru and Ruto of attempting to weaken county governments and the opposition but also accused many local opposition leaders of lacking the spine to stand up to the two leaders' alleged schemes.
"Let the president address historical land injustices in Coast which is the cause of insecurity in the region,"said the Mombasa senator who said he was shocked to see "some leaders in the Coast dining with Jubilee yet they are also facing the same problems coast people are facing."
They challenged CORD leaders leaning towards Jubilee to resign and contest their seats on the president's party warning that Coast should neither beg for development nor expect the president and his deputy to solve the historical land problems in Coast.
They spoke on Monday evening at a Ramadhan fast breaking ceremony which was also attended by former Prime minister Raila Odinga, Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula, Kakamega Senator Bonny Khalwale and Nyali MP Hezron Awiti Bolo.
Joho launched a scathing attack on Mombasa County Commissioner Nelson Marwa accusing him of belittling Coast leaders. Joho angrily accused Marwa of trying to derail his administration.
