LSK seeks MPs’ help to remove Attorney General from office

Kenya: The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has now moved to the National Assembly in its bid to have Attorney General (AG) Githu Muigai removed from office over his role in the Sh1.4 billion Anglo Leasing payments.

LSK through its chair, Eric Mutua and LSK Council chairman, Apollo Mboya have filed a petition seeking the dismissal of the AG for allegedly violating the Constitution in his handling of the payments.

The Speaker of the National Assembly Justin Muturi Tuesday confirmed that he had received the petition and that it will go before the necessary House procedures.

“The House standing orders require the Speaker to report to the House any petition received in my office,” he said.

In its petition, LSK has asked the House to consider the grounds raised and advice President Uhuru Kenyatta on the process of the AG’s removal from office.

LSK filed the petition even as it issued summons to the AG to appear before it this morning to respond to questions regarding his role in the payments made to one of the Anglo Leasing companies, Universal Satspace.

On Monday, the lawyers’ lobby wrote a letter to Muigai and asked that he appears before it to respond to matters raised with regard to the payments.

The LSK letter, which was seen by The Standard, claims that the AG had not responded adequately to several issues that had been raised by the council over Universal Satspace.

“…your response did not address the issues the council required as itemised in the letter of the Chairman dated 19th May 2014…

“The purpose of the meeting is to give you an opportunity to address the issues and share relevant information and documents to enable the council make a determination on their next course of action. Take notice that in default, the council shall proceed to make a determination without any further reference to you,” said the letter.

The petition by the LSK will proceed to the House Committee for Justice and Legal affairs.
