Uhuru Kenyatta: Assenting to Division of Revenue Bill does not undermine devolution

Nairobi, Kenya: President Uhuru Kenyatta has defended his assent to Division of Revenue Bill saying that he acted within the law.

Uhuru signed the bill into law on Monday, as National Assembly speaker Justin Muturi told parliament on Tuesday afternoon.

The president said the move does not undermine the devolution process.

“…contrary to claims that have been made by some political leaders, my assent to the Division of Revenue Bill 2013 does not in any way undermine the devolution process,” said Uhuru.

He added: “Indeed, the Bill I assented to was voted by the entire membership of the National Assembly which comprises all Parliamentarians –not just the Government side.”

The president also indicated that he assented to the bill in pursuance of the national interest and with a view to safeguarding the integrity and timeliness of the budgetary process.

Senators suspended business on Tuesday and went to a closed door meeting to discuss way forward following the president's decision.

They later announced that they would move to the Supreme Court on Wednesday to seek to nullify it.
