Form National Police Service Commission to avert violence

The office of the Ombudsman wants the government to immediately constitute the stalled National Police Service Commission and appoint the Inspector General as one way of containing the rising violence.

“We express our grave concern at the latest pattern of violence and insecurity that has engulfed various parts of the country,” Otiende Amollo, Chair of the Chairpersons’ forum of the Constitutional Commissions and Independent Offices said in a statement.

“We immediately call upon the relevant organs of government to immediately constitute the stalled National Police Service Commission, operationalize the National Police Service Act, and fastrack the appointment of the Inspector General of the National Police Service and his deputies.”

While condemning the murder of Sheikh Aboud Rogo, Amollo said the government should move fast and bring the killers to book.

He urged the government to make use of the information network to prevent violence similar to that witnessed in 2008 election related violence.

“We are of the considered view that Government’s warning systems have continued to be ineffective on detecting conflicts and informing timely and appropriate interventions. It is imperative that government utilizes its early warning system in order to prevent a return to the type of violence witnessed in 2007/08,” said he.

“Politicians and their agents must desist from any conduct and utterances that may stoke tension and conflict among communities.”
