Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has reaffirmed his support for all nurses across the country and called upon Kenyans to recognize the sacrifices they make in the health sector.

Mutua, while attending the International Nurses Week Celebrations at Taita Taveta University, said nurses played a vital role and their grievances should always be addressed.

Today marked the climax of the celebrations in Voi, Taita Taveta County. Mutua joined the Deputy Governor Majala Mlagui, who represented Governor Granton Samboja in celebrating the day with the senior nurses.

The Governor said Machakos County has a plan of hiring an additional 800 nurses and promote others.

“I am one of the few Governors who paid nurses their allowances. In 2015, my government promoted over 400 nurses and had their arrears settled in full. The same year we employed 800 new nurses. We have created the position of Director of Nursing and are recruiting from within Machakos,” he said.

The Governor highlighted his ambitions of contesting in 2022 elections where he said nurses’ welfare will be at the core of his business.

“Do not lose hope. In 2022, I will be contesting to be the 5th president of Kenya so that nurses and other workers can get the recognition, rights and respect they deserve,” he posed.

“We are always seen to concentrate more on political leaders and the rich in the society - little wonder we collectively suffer in many other aspects of our lives,” he added.
