The police in Mwatate are investigating an incident where a secondary school teacher collapsed and died on Monday night.

Sources said the Bura Girls High School teacher was pronounced dead on arrival at Mwatate Sub-county Hospital.

Area OCPD Monica Kimani confirmed they had launched investigations into the cause of the teacher’s death.

“We are treating it as a case of sudden death as we wait for a postmortem on the body, which will determine the actual cause of death,” said Kimani yesterday.

She added: "The 27-year-old is said to have been well during the day and even taught his students. He collapsed at night and died as he was being taken to hospital. His body was taken to Voi County Referral Hospital as we continue with investigations."

Death has rocked the school in the recent past. Police and education sources said the school had lost two other teachers and a board member over the past three weeks.

Ms Kimani said: "We are only investigating the incident that has been reported to us. If there are other deaths, then we are not aware. They have not been reported to us."

"The teacher was well during the day and there was no sign he was sick. His death is a big blow to his wife and two children as well as the school," said a source at the school.

The school's management was not immediately available for comment on the incident.
