Blogger charged over William Kabogo Facebook post

Kiambu Governor William Kabogo

A blogger who allegedly accused Kiambu Governor William Kabogo of importing substandard eggs in a Facebook post will know his fate today, after spending three days in a Mombasa police cell.

The Nairobi-based blogger was charged in a Mombasa court Thursday with publishing false information. The court directed Anthony Njoroge Mburu alias Waime Mburu to be remanded until today when his application to be released on bail will be determined.

Mburu was charged with three counts of harmful publication contrary to section 66(1) of the Penal code.

According to the charge sheet, he is alleged to have posted false words on social media in January 8 that were intended to cause harm to Charlotte Wangui, who heads Sea Cross Farm in Kwale.

The accused is alleged to have written that Kabogo bought a thousand acres in Kwale, where he established Sea Cross Farm as a cover-up to import cheap and low-quality eggs into the country.

The blogger alleged that the farm, which supplies eggs to Mombasa, has caused the death of poultry farming. But he denied the charges before Mombasa Senior Principal Magistrate Nicholas Njagi.

The magistrate remanded him at Shimo La Tewa for three days awaiting his bond ruling.

The farm manager on Tuesday complained to police over misuse of the social media by the blogger and the defamation claims against the farm.

In an interview with the press at the farm, Dr Wangui distanced the farm ownership from Kabogo.
