Eight police officers face murder charges

Several police officers who shot and killed two senior Administration Police (AP) officers in an alleged operation on narcotics in Mombasa three years ago will be charged with murder.

The eight officers, who belonged to Flying Squad unit, will be charged with the murder of the two AP inspectors at Ganjoni in 2009 following a recommendation by Director of Public Prosecutor Keriako Tobiko.

Coast Provincial Criminal Investigation Officer Ambrose Munyasia on Monday confirmed his office has already summoned the officers to appear before Mombasa Divisional Criminal Investigation Officer (DCIO) Shadrack Kitheka.

“Yes, the officers have been summoned to appear before the Mombasa DCIO because investigations into the matter are complete,” said Munyasia.

The officers allegedly shot dead Chief Inspector Badi Majirani and Inspector Juma Mangatu from Kilindini Police Station under mysterious circumstances.

It was claimed the two APs were shot dead over claims they had information about some drugs, which had entered the country through Mombasa port.

Sources said the slain officers had got information that some drugs had arrived at the port and were killed while trying to lay ambush.

Still waiting

Police denied the theory and insisted the suspects were criminals who were planning to stage a robbery in the town.

Monday, Kitheka confirmed he had instruction to handle the matter.

“I was told these officers were to report at 8.30 am in my office but I have not seen them. I am still waiting. You can see they are not here. When they report, I will ask my boss about what to do with them,” said Kitheka.

Sources told The Standard that the officers who were transferred to various parts of the country were supposed to be arrested and arraigned in the court today.

The DCIO who had promised to alert the media incase they had arrived did not do so, indicating that the suspects had not surrendered.
