The death of a university student has led to tension in Kutus town.

The Second Year student was attacked on Wednesday night by armed robbers near Thiba River Bridge, while on his way to the hostels after studies.

The robbers knocked him down, stabbed him several times, before fleeing from the scene with his laptop and a mobile phone.

Witnesses said the student cried for help, alerting his colleagues who rushed to the scene only to find him dead.

"When they found their colleague dead, the students got annoyed and started stoning motorists on the busy Kagio-Kutus road,” said John Murage, a resident of Kutus town.

He explained that the riots continued until police moved in.

Efforts to get comments from the university administration were unsuccessful. Security personnel manning the gate declined to allow journalists into the facility.

“We have instructions not to allow strangers into the university," one of the officers told journalists who wished to speak with Vice Chancellor Mary Ndungu.

Yesterday, the students vowed to pursue the killers and appealed to those involved to turn themselves in before they hunted them down and took the law into their hands.
