The Kiambu Member of County Assembly who had been missing for a week was Sunday night found alive in Kinungi area, along the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway.

Samuel Gitau, who has since been moved to the Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi briefly told police he had been in a car boot all along and managed to free himself Sunday night.

But police said they did not believe his theory and will allow him time to recover, then grill him for more information.

Gitau is said to have briefly talked to police before he later declined to talk further.

A farmer, Patrick Mugo told police he and other locals found Gitau on the roadside, staggering and took him to his house before they alerted police.

He looked soiled and frail when his colleagues and Kiambu Governor William Kabogo arrived to pick him.

Police had earlier on widened the search to Nakuru following reports he had been found there, but Mugo directed them to his makeshift in Kinungi which is about 50 kilometers from Nairobi.

He was put in an ambulance and rushed to Nairobi.

Gitau went missing on March 8 from his home after he had gone to withdraw money from an ATM in Ruiru. Police say they want to know what happened to him and if the incident was a kidnap. It is not clear why he left behind his mobile phone in the house when he went missing.

Gitau’s saloon car was found parked outside his residential gate on the morning of Sunday 8, long after he had left home for a nearby bank in the town.

Police said he withdrew Sh10,000 from the ATM and were working well with the bank as part of efforts to know where he would be.

Police said the car was found with the lights on and engine running.

His family reported the matter at Ruiru police station last Sunday morning prompting the search.

The team launched a search at a nearby quarry and other thickets in vain.
